Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a physiotherapy session last?
Each physiotherapy session at our Middlesbrough clinic typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the type of treatment required. Your first session will include a comprehensive assessment, where our physiotherapists take a full history of your condition, discuss your symptoms, and carry out a physical examination. Follow-up sessions focus on hands-on treatment, rehabilitation exercises, and progress monitoring. The number of sessions you need will depend on your specific condition and treatment goals. Some patients may require a few sessions for minor injuries, while others may need a longer-term rehabilitation plan for chronic conditions or post-surgery recovery. Our team will always discuss a personalised treatment plan that suits your needs.
Can physiotherapy help with long-term pain conditions?
Yes, physiotherapy is highly effective in managing and reducing chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, nerve pain, and persistent back or neck pain. Our Middlesbrough physiotherapists use a combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, massage, and electrotherapy to help improve mobility, strengthen muscles, and reduce pain. Unlike pain medication, physiotherapy addresses the root cause of pain rather than just the symptoms, offering a long-term solution. We also provide self-management strategies, including exercise plans, posture correction techniques, and lifestyle advice to help you maintain your progress at home.
What should I wear to a physiotherapy session?
For your physiotherapy session at our Middlesbrough clinic, we recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy movement and provides access to the area being treated. If you’re coming for a knee, ankle, or leg injury, wear shorts or leggings that can be rolled up. For shoulder, neck, or back treatment, wearing a vest or t-shirt is best. If you have post-surgery rehabilitation or specific conditions requiring exercise-based therapy, trainers or supportive footwear may be necessary. Our priority is ensuring you feel comfortable during treatment, so if you’re unsure, feel free to ask before your session. Changing facilities are available at the clinic if needed.
How soon should I see a physiotherapist after an injury?
For the best recovery outcomes, it’s advisable to see a physiotherapist as soon as possible after an injury. Early treatment can help reduce swelling, prevent further damage, and start the healing process sooner. For acute injuries, such as sprains, muscle strains, or ligament damage, seeing a physiotherapist within the first 48 to 72 hours can help with pain management and guide early rehabilitation. If you’ve had surgery, your surgeon may recommend starting physiotherapy within days or weeks to aid recovery. Even for older injuries or chronic pain, physiotherapy can still be highly effective in restoring function and improving mobility. If you’re unsure whether you need treatment, our team in Middlesbrough can provide expert advice.
What happens in my first physiotherapy appointment?
During your initial physiotherapy appointment we will conduct a detailed assessment to understand your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to your condition. This is followed by a physical examination, where we assess movement, strength, posture, and pain levels. Based on the findings, we develop a personalised treatment plan, which may include manual therapy, rehabilitation exercises, electrotherapy, or soft tissue techniques. You’ll receive clear advice on managing your condition and may be given home exercises to support recovery. Our goal is to provide an effective hands-on treatment plan while helping you understand how to prevent future problems.
